Koh Samui cooking with hotel pickup: our family class at Smiley Cook

A rainy Samui day turned into our kids' favorite meal of the trip. What the Smiley Cook class is like with children, and how pickup works.

Editor's pick: Smiley Cook on Viator

This is the class our family took: two hours, four dishes and a dessert, a market visit, and kids who actually cook. From $68 per person, 4.6 out of 5 across 93 reviews, with free hotel pickup in Mae Nam, Bophut, Plai Laem, Choeng Mon and Chaweng.

We booked the Smiley Cook class in Bophut on a gray Samui morning, and it ended up as the meal our kids talked about for the rest of the trip. The kids made pad thai themselves, start to finish, and the covered cooking space meant the rain outside simply did not matter. Here is how the class works with children, and what to know about pickup before you book.

What the class is like

The class runs two hours: four dishes and a dessert, a market visit of about 30 minutes, and a group of up to 8, taught in English. The listed price is 2,100 baht per person cooking. A non-cooking companion pays 1,300 baht and still gets the market visit and the food. Our kids chopped, stirred and plated their own dishes - the pad thai was the proud one. The market walk at the start is where they met the ingredients they would cook with an hour later.

Hotel pickup

The operator runs free hotel transfers in Mae Nam, Bophut, Plai Laem, Choeng Mon and Chaweng. We were picked up on time and the ride is separate from the two-hour class, so plan half a day in total. If your hotel is outside those areas, send the operator your exact hotel before paying and ask about a pickup time and any surcharge.

Cooking with kids

This is the part that made it for us. The kids were not watching - they were cooking. The listed terms have children under 5 free of charge (their second site says under 3, so confirm for your child's age); for real participation, ask the operator which tasks fit your child's age, whether an adult cooks beside them and whether a companion ticket is the right call. If anyone in your family has allergies, raise it when you book and they will tell you what can be substituted.

Rain and cancellations

We cooked through a proper tropical downpour and stayed dry - the cooking area is covered. The market route is more exposed, so in heavy rain ask whether the visit can be shortened or changed. Cancellation terms and date availability are on the booking listing; check them for your dates before paying.

Where to stay: a family resort on Bophut Beach

If you have not booked a hotel on Koh Samui yet, Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach is one family option, and it sits inside the class pickup zone. Its website lists the Jungle's Book Kids Club, free for hotel guests up to age 12 (children under 4 stay with a parent or babysitter), and a Kids Stay and Eat Free program under Holiday Inn policies.

Smiley Cook

4.8/5 · 605 reviews

August 2026 visitors liked the market tour and explanations. A family with teenagers enjoyed the class in July; another July reviewer found the pace sometimes fast for beginners. It matches what we saw - the kids were busy the whole time.

Questions parents ask

What does the Smiley Cook class on Koh Samui include?

A two-hour class with four dishes and a dessert, a market visit of about 30 minutes and a group of up to 8, taught in English. The listed price is 2,100 baht per person cooking.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes - free transfers run from Mae Nam, Bophut, Plai Laem, Choeng Mon and Chaweng. We were picked up on time. Outside those areas, confirm your hotel, a pickup time and any surcharge with the operator before paying.

Can children really join the cooking?

Ours did, and made their own pad thai. Listed terms have children under 5 free; note that two sites carrying the Smiley Cook name list different free-entry terms (under 5 on one, under 3 on the other), so confirm the price and your child's participation by age with the operator before booking.

What does a non-cooking companion pay?

The listed companion price is 1,300 baht, including the market visit and the food.

Is the class a good rainy-day option?

It was ours. The cooking area is covered and we stayed dry through a downpour. The market route is less sheltered, so in heavy rain ask about shortening or changing that part.
